Congratulations once again to Steve McCulloch, Marc Cairnie, Gary Malone, Alan Mackay, and Nathan McCulloch, for winning the Edinburgh Inter Club Championship for Kingsknowe.
Friday the team played Swanston New with the father and son combination of Steve and Nathan McCulloch playing in the front pair with Gary Malone and Marc Cairnie playing at the back. After a shaky start we came through comfortably to win 7&6.
Alan Mackay was introduced to the team on the Saturday, pairing up with Gary Malone, leaving Steve McCulloch and Marc Cairnie to join together again. We played Prestonfield on Saturday morning and again delivered a comfortable win with the back pair of Alan and Gary finishing well up on a less experienced team than they are used to playing against, albeit they had knocked out Silverknowes in the first round.
With the cobwebs well and truly blown away we played the home side, Murrayfield, in the semi final on Saturday afternoon and it is fair to say that from the first tee shot the front pair of Steve and Marc lit the touch paper. Not only did they cover 18 holes in 2hrs 15mins they had only hit 63 shots, 7 under par and finished all square. The back pair remained solid and the victory was sealed with holes to spare.
The final was set for Sunday morning against a young Liberton team who had a couple of players playing off of a plus handicap but as the old saying goes “there is no replacement for experience” with both pairings looking solid throughout the final. The game was eventually closed out 7&6 which was very satisfying and a little more comfortable than the Dispatch win, albeit little less exciting.
Record books are being checked to see if the “foursomes” double, Dispatch and Inter Club, has ever been achieved before and we look forward to confirmation one way or another soon.
Thanks go out to the members and family who made it to Murrayfield over the 3 days to support the team as it does really make a difference to the players.
